A “Jump to content” link at the top of each page provides users with a method for bypassing the header and navigation and going directly to the content on the page.
On pages with section navigation—a list of links to pages under the same main topic—a “Jump to section navigation menu” link at the top of the page allows users to skip over the header, main navigation, and content to go directly to the section navigation menu.
Color
We have used high contrast colors throughout our site.
You can adjust the color combinations by changing the settings of your browser or operating system. Visit the BBC’s My Web My Way for complete instructions.
Text resizing
The text size on this site is specified using relative units of measurement. That means you can resize it using your browser’s text-size controls if you find it too small to read comfortably.
To adjust text size in your browser:
- Internet Explorer 7/8: Click Page, navigate to Text Size, and choose your desired text size
- Internet Explorer 6: Click View, navigate to Text Size, and choose your desired text size
- Mozilla Firefox: Click View, navigate to Zoom, and choose your desired text size. Zoom in increases the text size and zoom out decreases the text size. Or hit CTRL and + to increase text size, and CTRL and - to decrease text-size.
- Opera: Click View, navigate to Zoom, and choose your desired zoom level
- Safari: Click View, navigate to Zoom In to increase the size of the text or Zoom Out to decrease the size of the text. If you choose Zoom Text Only and then choose either Zoom In or Zoom Out, only the size of the text will get bigger or smaller. All the other objects on the screen will remain the same size. Or hit CTRL and + to increase text size, and CTRL and - to decrease text-size.
Headings
You can navigate this site using headings alone. Visitors using recent versions of screen readers can navigate using the following keystrokes:
- H to cycle forwards through the headings
- Shift + H to cycle backwards through the headings
- 1 to navigate to the next level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the next heading on this level)
- Shift + 1 to navigate to the previous level 1 heading (or a number between 1 and 6 to navigate to the previous heading on this level)
- INSERT + F6 to provide a list of all headings
In Opera, the following keys can be used to navigate headings:
- S to cycle forwards through the headings
- W to cycle backwards through the headings
Links
Links are identified by a solid, blue underline. When your mouse hovers over them, the underline disappears and the text changes color to green. When you give links focus with your keyboard, the background of the link changes to green and the text color changes to white. For example link to the homepage. Links change to black after you have visited the link.
Links are written to make sense out of context. All links can be followed in any browser, even if scripting is turned off. There are no links that open new windows without warning.
Abbreviations and acronyms
The expanded form of an abbreviation or acronym is provided the first time it occurs within a web page. The abbreviation or acronym follows immediately in parentheses. Subsequent uses of the abbreviation or acronym have been marked with the title attribute to provide the full or expanded form of the expression.
You can identify abbreviation or acronym text by a dotted blue underline, for example: XHTML. When you hover your mouse over an abbreviation or acronym, your cursor changes to a help cursor (a cursor with a question mark to the right of the cursor).
Images
Images, other than purely decorative graphics, include a meaningful alternative text description. Purely decorative graphics have been assigned an empty ALT attribute.
